Days

Juggle the hours like little red balls -
perfect, static, and ever rotating.
The trick is never to focus
too much attention on any one instant -
keep your eyes straight ahead, keep life
on the peripherals;
as long as everything stays in the air,
it's working.

Take your moments
wherever they can be stolen. The pattern of ants
crawling over trash in the street can hold drama.
The mobius strip of faces changing
day by day into strangers in your kitchen -
this can be forgiven. It's art.
The hours are enemies to us all.
Our only friend, peace.

Cunningly, Americans know that books contain a person, and they want the person, not the book.”
